It's often said that a bridge is safe once the water goes down — in fact, weakened foundations and washed-out approaches can remain dangerous after the surface looks calm, so reopening requires inspection.
Bridges depend on the ground beneath and around their supports, not just on their visible beams and roadway. Flood damage often begins below the waterline, where erosion can be hard to see until the bridge suddenly fails.
Imagine placing a table on sand and then spraying a powerful hose underneath it: the sand disappears, the table becomes unstable, and the rushing water can carry it away.
Understanding this helps explain why flood-resistant bridge design, inspections, and warnings focus on water speed and the riverbed as much as on the bridge itself.
Imagine a log lodges against one side of a bridge during a sudden flood, forcing more water around a pier than usual. The current removes sediment beside and beneath that pier, leaving it less supported while the bridge still appears mostly normal. As the pier settles or shifts, the roadway can crack or become unsafe for traffic.
